WELCOME TO THE DURANT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM
Durant Elementary is a dynamic year round school with a wonderful and diverse student population. The music program reflects this diversity with the use of multi cultural music and instruments to teach the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Your student will come to music once a week for 45 minutes.
When a student enters Kindergarten we immediately begin to learn to use the instruments we are born with...our voices. I work with the students to start using their "head voices" as opposed to their chest voices which can sometimes cause children to sing off key. As they progress the students will learn correct singing posture and breathing techniques. Your student is expected to sing every week!
In addition to singing we will play a variety of instruments. Orff instruments are barred instruments such as xylophones, and glockenspiels and assist in teaching melody and pitch. We also have many various percussion instruments such as maracas, drums, tambourines, triangles etc. that help us learn beat and rhythm. Fourth graders will learn to play the recorder, a woodwind instrument that assists in learning rhythm and melody. The recorder is a good way to discover if your student has a knack for a musical instrument and might would be a good candidate to join the band in middle school! The fourth graders also take an exciting field trip to hear a live performance of the North Carolina Symphony.
I do expect participation in every way in my music classroom, whether we are dancing, singing or playing instruments. It is important for every student to try their best. The words "I don't like doing that" will not be accepted as an excuse for lack of participation. As long as your student is giving their best effort he/she will receive a good participation grade on their report card.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with your fabulous, amazing, brilliant children!
